What Exactly Is My Routine?

Since this is my hair blog, some people are probably wondering what I mean by no water or sebum only hair care.  What exactly do I do with my hair?  This blog post explains it all!

The only hair care tools that are necessary for my routine are your hands, however, a boar bristle brush (BBB), a wide toothed comb, and some coconut oil if your hair is very dry can be useful.

No water or sebum only hair care is a method of hair care that doesn't use any water or hair products. It sounds gross, and ucky, but if you do the method right, you can transition into having beautiful, clean looking hair. The method includes scritching and massaging the scalp to loosen dead skin cells and debris, and preen and possibly brushing the hair to remove the dust and dirt and move the extra oil down the hair strands to the ends.

Exactly how I take care of my hair is instructed below. You can modify the method to suit your needs, however daily massaging, scritching, and preening is a must in this hair care method. This method might not work for everyone, but it works wonderful for me!

In the morning when I wake up, I will do a s/m/p (scritch/massage/preen) session. To start off, detangle the hair gently using your fingers or a wide-toothed comb. Next I massage the scalp with the pads of my fingers. Take your time while doing this, it should be relaxing. After that, I take my fingernails (you can use a fine toothed comb too) and scratch or scritch my scalp EXTREMELY gently. Take your time while doing this too. After scritching it's time to preen the hair. Open your hands and pull on your roots a bit, spreading the sebum with your hands down the hair about two inches. Then separate the canopy of your hair into sections, and smooth your palms over each of the sections, spreading the sebum down to the ends of the hair. Do this a couple of times to each section. Then flip your hair over and do the same to the underneath section. Your preening is now over. If your hair does well with brushing, you can now thoroughly brush your hair to remove dust and debris. After brushing you should ALWAYS clean your brush if you have the time. Since it's removing the dirt, it's important to keep it clean. I then dress my hair for the day, usually putting it up. The morning part of my routine is now done!

When nighttime rolls around, I take down my hair and repeat the s/m/p session again. Then I braid it up, throw on a satin sleep cap and go to sleep.

If your hair is dry (definitely NOT typical when doing sebum only) you can use some oil or brilliantine to make your hair softer and shinier. I use coconut oil whenever I really need to. Apply the smallest amount of oil possible to your hands. Next take your brush and brush the bristles over your palm. Then brush out your hair. I've never done this without using a brush, however I will see if I can develop a technique without the brush.

And there you have it. My hair care routine. I hope you enjoyed! :)
